AIB dice no al licenziamento della direttrice della Biblioteca del Congresso USA
L’Associazione italiana biblioteche – che è già intervenuta pubblicamente contro i tagli della presidenza statunitense all’unica agenzia federale dedicata al finanziamento dei servizi bibliotecari, l’Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) – esprime sconcerto e preoccupazione per il licenziamento di Carla Hayden, direttrice della Library of Congress, una delle più importanti biblioteche al mondo.
Carla Hayden è stata licenziata per ragioni ideologiche, con effetto immediato, dal suo ruolo di “Librarian of Congress” tramite un avviso recapitatole via mail da parte dell’Ufficio Personale Presidenziale della Casa Bianca. È stata accusata di aver scelto libri inadatti per l’infanzia e adottato politiche di equità, diversità e inclusione.
Hayden ha raggiunto questa posizione, in passato spesso assegnata unicamente ad intellettuali con profili non bibliotecari, dopo una intensa carriera di bibliotecaria e docente di biblioteconomia. E’ stata presidente dell’ALA e prima afroamericana a ricevere il premio “Bibliotecario dell’anno” del Library Journal. E’ stata anche la prima donna e prima afroamericana alla guida della Library of Congress e il suo mandato decennale sarebbe scaduto tra un anno: nel 2016 infatti era stata nominata a questa carica dal presidente Obama, con ratifica del Senato degli Stati Uniti.
A distanza di pochi giorni, l’Amministrazione Trump ha poi licenziato la più alta funzionaria per il diritto d’autore, Shira Perlmutter, anche lei con effetto immediato e notifica via mail. I profondi cambiamenti che la nuova presidenza statunitense sta imprimendo alla struttura amministrativa coinvolgono anche le biblioteche, con ordini preoccupanti.
Le biblioteche sono organismi di diffusione ed elaborazione della conoscenza e non possono essere al servizio di un governo o di un partito. I bibliotecari sono professionisti delle conoscenze, con uno specifico codice etico che è garanzia per chi fruisce dei servizi delle biblioteche della possibilità di accedere ad ogni tipo di informazione, senza censure.
AIB sostiene gli appelli dell’ALA ed esprime alle associazioni professionali statunitensi il proprio appoggio, garantendo il proprio sostegno per le iniziative intraprese e quelle che continueranno ad avviare per difendere i valori, i progetti, i diritti, i finanziamenti dei bibliotecari e delle biblioteche negli Stati Uniti.

Italian Library Association – which has already publicly intervened against the U.S. presidency’s cuts to the only federal agency dedicated to funding the
library services, the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) – expresses dismay and concern over the Carla Hayden firing, director of the Library of Congress, one of the most important libraries in the world.
Carla Hayden was fired for ideological reasons, with immediate effect, from her role as Librarian of Congress via e-mail from the White House Presidential Personnel Office.
She has been accused of selecting books unsuitable for children and for adopting policies of equity, diversity and inclusion.
Hayden achieved this position, in the past often assigned solely to intellectuals with non-librarian profiles, after an intensive career as a librarian and lecturer in library science. She has served as ALA President and the first African American to receive the Library Journal’s “Librarian of the Year” award. She was also the first
woman and first African American to lead the Library of Congress, and her
ten-year term would expire in a year: in fact, in 2016 she had been appointed to this position by President Obama, with ratification by the United States Senate.
A few days later, the Trump Administration fired the highest ranking copyright official, Shira Perlmutter, also with immediate effect and e-mail notification. The profound changes that the new U.S. presidency is making to the administrative structure also involve libraries, with disturbing orders.
Libraries are entities for the dissemination and processing of knowledge and cannot serve a government or a party. Librarians are knowledge professionals, with a specific code of ethics that is a guarantee for those who use library services to be able to access all kinds of information, without censorship.
AIB supports the ALA’s appeals and expresses its support to the U.S. professional associations, ensuring its support for the initiatives it has taken and for the future to defend the values, projects, rights, and funding of librarians and libraries in the United States.
